Deficient Is the Best New Book and Other Reasons August Was Great
A Deficient book review and recap of my Augtober
You need to start believing in your own damn mind because no one else is gonna do it for you.
Happy September, Friends!
I don’t know about you, but last month just flew by over here. Another Angry August is behind us and hoodie-weather mornings have arrived.
August was full of exciting things, not least of all being the advanced copy of a soon-to-be-released novel I was given to review.
Deficient Book Review
Deficient by Michael Solis is a brilliantly paced sci-fi action-adventure story that follows a teenage outsider named Alejandro on a quest to find his missing best friend.
I won’t go into a whole synopsis because the description already does a great job. You can read it here when you go to buy the book.
Alejandro stands alone as a Deficient in a world of superhumans with accelerated abilities. He’s an instantly lovable underdog who will break your heart on the first page and make you laugh out loud with his snarky commentary.
But Alé is far from the only charming character in this wonderfully written novel. His friendship with Yalamba will pull at the heartstrings of every almost-loner who had an “us against the world” bestie in high school.
Alé’s support team gives strong “Scooby Gang from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV show, not the movie)” vibes in all the right ways. And the villain in this story is the most complex I’ve read since President Snow in The Hunger Games.
I firmly believe that excellent characters make a story shine, and Deficient delivers. This novel also gets an A+ for representing a diverse spectrum of characters and inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes.
Deficient will be released on September 12! Don’t worry, you don’t have to wait to order it.

Full disclosure - Michael Solis is a friend of the family and a person I’ve known since childhood. He’s always been exceptional, and I’m incredibly proud of what he’s achieved with this novel. Writing a book is fecking hard, and it would mean a lot to me personally if you would support his work. Thank you 😊
End of August Review
I hope you’re in the mood for reviews, because I ain’t done! Here are some highlights from this past month:
Celebrated 3 years sober with ice cream sandwiches on the beach
Ran my first trail race (a 5K, don’t get too excited) in about 4 years.
Started doing tarot readings for hipcampers and they’re a big hit! Come camp at our weed farm and get a tarot reading under the trees!
Decorated our front porch with weirdo gourds from the Jurassic Park-sized squash plant volunteering in the chicken yard
Harvested garlic, marking one full year of eating only homegrown garlic!
Watched the Blue Super Moon rise through the pine trees with Jason
How was your month? Comments are open for everyone on this post so please share if you feel called to do so publicly.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading! I appreciate you!
